1876 – COINCIDENCE of DATE; 100th ANNIVERSARY OF THE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE YEAR CHECK WITH BENJAMIN FRANKLIN.

One of the primary institutions of Providence*, Rhode Island was the Grocers and Producers Bank and featured here is a check written on this corporation all dated 1876 ( 100 year anniversary of the signing of the American Declaration of Independence ).

It is perhaps ironic, that Benjamin Franklin, who fought so vigorously against British taxation of the American Colonies, should appear on these bank check paid revenues of 2¢ ( yellow – orange colored ), imposed to pay the costs of the Civil War.

*Providence played an important role in the American Revolution; it had its own “Tea Party,” ( where tea was burned in protest against taxation ), both American and French troops were quartered at Brown University and at The Old State House was the scene of the signing of the Rhode Island Independence Act on May 4, 1776.
