In his youth (circa 368 – 365 BCE), Philip was a hostage in Thebes and received a military and diplomatic education there. In 364, Philip returned to Macedon and with the deaths of his older brothers, he was able to take the throne in 359. Philip’s military skills and expansionist vision of Macedonian greatness brought him enormous success. He was assassinated in 336 BCE.
