World Trade Center on early Telephone card

It’s incredible to think that while the entire world was using magnetic strip type telephone cards to prepay calls, the USA was sticking to their number dial-in technology. Here is America’s first attempt at getting the, now famous Landis & Gyr system in motion.

It was the commitment of the largest company in America, New York Telephone / NYNEX ( now called Verizon ), to pioneer these special telephones along with these cards. Initially only a few of these special yellow phones were available ( one at the Staten Island Ferry ), but others began popping up around New York’s busiest locations.

Here is one of America’s First magnetic strip cards in brand new, unused, mint condition, in the original packaging.

The card features a view of lower Manhattan with the magnetic strip cutting thru the two towers of the World Trade Center.
